Selected Artisan of the Homo Faber Guide
Homo Faber returns to Venice from 1 to 30 September 2026, at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini on San Giorgio Maggiore, under the artistic direction of Es Devlin.
The theme is light, and what it does to material in the hand of a maker. Mosaic has answered that question for nine centuries in this city.
The Michelangelo Foundation approached the studio for the Homo Faber Guide. Artefact Mosaic Studio has been at Castello 6477/A since 2016, founded by two Maestri Mosaicisti trained at the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli in Spilimbergo, the only institution in the world whose graduates hold that title under Italian law. It is a seven minute walk from Saint Mark's and one vaporetto stop from San Giorgio.

You design spaces, and at some point you want to know what mosaic can really do in one.
Come to the studio and hold the material in the light. Murano smalti, natural marble, tesserae of 24 carat gold leaf. We work through your project on the real surface rather than a photograph: the format, thickness and direction of the tesserae, the substrate, whether plaster, composite panel, timber or masonry, the laying, the mortars, the joints and the protection, then the installation, its sequence and its anchoring into the building.
